At a meeting of the Gisborne Central School Commit fee. held last evening’, assistance given ly a strong committee of ladies in connection with the annual ball, held a fortnight ago, was acknowledged. Til the report- of the headmaster, Mr. .1. K. Shimmin. the total roll number was reported at 672, with an average attendance of 621.6. equivalent to 92.6 of the roll. The report included reference to the success ol the combined school sports, held on IH'klay last, and also expressed I,he appreciation ol the headmaster and stall in connection with the outcome of the school ball. Endorsing the comments of the headmaster with regard to the- work of the ladies’ commit ter, the School Committee also passed a vote of thanks to r.lio parents arid pupils for the support given to the. ‘ball. .It was pointed out that many parents went to considerable expense m preparing their children’s fancy costumes, and also hail contributed to the. supper arrangements, the degree of support given, speaking volumes for the interest taken in school activities.

A letter was received from the Turangam/i 'Library Committee, outlining the project lor co-ordinating the school libraries under an exchange, system by means of which each -school will henelit by the circulation of a central stock of ‘volumes. The T-urangnnui Library Committee will lind £26 lor this project, and the respective schools are expected to furnish contributions to Ihe cost. also. The lei,ter was received. and appreciation of the library committee's work was expressed, a donation of £5 to the cost of the scheme being approved. It was also decided to appeal to parents for donations of slightly used books suitable for the, central stock, and not now in use in (he respective homes.

The caretaker of the school was complimented upon his ell’nrts. and he was voted an increase in his allowance. Resohilions carried at the conference of school authorities held last week, at which the Director of Education discussed the establishment of an intermediate -school in Gisborne, were endorsed by the commit lee, particular emphasis being placed on the need tor a new infant school at Gisborne Central. Accounts amounting to £25 welo passed for pavmcnt.
