WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
WHATATUTU MEETING On Friday afternoon the. Whatatutu Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the institute rooms. The meeting, presided over by Mrs.. McLeod, was a very busy one, though not well attended, only 18 members and three visitors being present. An apology was received from Mrs. King for her unavoidable absence. Arrangements .were made for the annual flower show, to be held on November 6, and Mrs. D. Gabble was appointed delegate to attend the council meeting to be. held in Gisborne. A long and newsy letter from the link in Lansing, England, was enjoyed. The roll-call, something made or treasured when a child, brought forth many treasures, their histories often being most amusing. Mrs. Shaw’s demonstration of rag rug-making was a very popular one, a beautifully finished specimen being much admired.
The competitions resulted: Best kept onions : Mrs. McLeod, 1; Mrs. Shaw, 2. Papier mache: -Mrs. Shaw, 1; Mrs. McLeod, 2; Mrs. Shaw, 3, One doz.cn heaviest lieu eggs for Ileni Mat cron Children’s Home : Mrs. Pevereal, 1; Mesdames Pickett and Gubble, 2; Mesdames Van Slvke and Murray, 4.
The amusement was items by junior members. Tit Miss Mabel Cleaver’s contribution, a competition, “Streets of Gisborne,” a dainty d’ovlcy worked by herself was won by Mrs. Bradford, anil a humorous; playptte, “Oh, Christina.” acted by the Misses Alice and Ora Russell, was much appreciated. The motto for the month was “A merry heart doetli good like medicine.” A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Murray and Pevereal, and the, meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem,
