The lit. Rev. 11. W. Williams, Bishop of Waiapu, visited Whakatane during the week-end.
Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., returned to Gisborne over the week-end, to give attention to Mayoral duties, lie will tie iu Gisborne until Wednesday, when he leaves for Wellington to resume his I’arliameutary work.
Mr. W. H. Sargent, of the Gisborne staff of the Bank of Australasia, has received notice of his transfer to the Whakatane branch of the bank. Mi. Sargent, who came to Gisborne from Auckland two years ago, takes over his new duties on October 21. He will be succeeded by Mr. Oswald Simmonds, of the Whakatane branch.
Inspector G. B. Edwards arrived in Gisborne yesterday from Wellington. Prior to his departure from Wellington to take charge of the police station here, Mr. Edwards was the guest of honour at a farewell in. the police library and was presented with a razor and a bowl bag by Superintendent D. C. Fraser. The Police Pipe Band presented him with a desk calendar. There was a lm-ge attendance of members of the police force from the Wellington provincial district. Speakers emphasised the popularity of Mr. Edwards, who, it was stated, was always approachable. He was at all times keen fo assist junior members of tho force and had been untiring in his efforts to promote goodwill among the men. Besides the superintendent, other speakers were Sub-Inspectors C. E. Roafih, If. Scott and J. Carroll, SeniorSergeants J. A. Dempsey, D. J. O’Neill and J. Powell, Sergeants G. Paine, P. Doyle and D. Beard, and Constable T. Smith, on behalf of the constables in the Wellington district, aiid Pipe-Major N. J. McPhee, on behalf of the pipe band,
