FALSE STATEMENT
POSED AS MARRIED RELIEF WORKER FINED CASK FROM TE KARAKA A single man, Frederick Linslcy, was fined £2 and costs 10s by Mr. E. L. Walton, in the Police Court to-day on each of two charges of making a false statement at Te Karaka for the purpose .of obtaining employment, He told the Unemployment Department that he was a married man with four children, and as a result obtained £l7O in relief wages more than he should have done. Four charges were preferred, the dates mentioned being January 13, March 9, May 11, and June 14, but the first two, on the application of Detective MeWliirter, were withdrawn. The accused pleaded guilty to the other two charges. Detective MeWliirter said that the accused was a single man 47 years of age, and made the declarations mentioned in the charges at the frequent intervals. At first, his family was stated to be three children, then the defendant increased his family to four. During the period, lie had collected £l7O more than he should have done. He was in receipt of a soldier’s pension of 10s a week.
The accused stated that he made the. statements because a single man could not a fair hearing. He was lined £2 and costs 10s on each charge.
