NOTED GREEK PASSES
M. ALEXANDER ZAIMIS FORMER PRESIDENT •LONDON, Sept. 16. The death is nmioimeed of the noted Greek statesman, M. Alexander Zaimis. The late M. Zaimis, who was born in October, 1855, studied law in German universities and later in Paris. He came of a family which played an important part in Greece at the time of the War of Liberation in the third decade of last century. From 1890. onwards. he was Premier or Minister in many Greek Cabinets. His aid was usually invoked when it. was a question of extricating the country from some awkward situation for he stood above party and had earned the nation's confidence. In November, 1926, M. Zaimis accepted the premiership of a coalition Cabinet. Once more he had to weather a succession of crises. Between November, 1926, and April, 1927, there, were five reconstructions of the Government, several military plots, and constant trouble with the Royalists. In August, a dispute over financial policy led M. Zaimis to resign owing to the "defection of the (Royalist) People's Party. Eventually he formed a Government without the Royalists, who promised not to .raise the dynastic issue.
After two more terms as Premier, M. Zaimis was elected President of Greece in December, 1929, holding that post until October, 1935, when the restoration of the monarchy was decided upon. He had rendered great service to Greece while President.
