WAIROA FIRE BOARD

QUARTERLY MEETING NO. CALLS .IN ?, MONTHS (Herald Correspondent.) At the Wairoa Fire Board's quarterly meeting there were present Messrs. fi. L. Harker, chairman, J." W. F. Norrle, W. G. Hay and G. C. Fletcher, and the superintendent, Mr. D. Byford, ait apology being noted on behalf of Mr. W. 11. Brady. Some discussion ensued as to the failure to institute proceedings against, a settler for permitting a chimney to get on fire. The doubt was as to whether the police should proceed, or the borough, under a by-law. As the alleged happening took place some film ago, it was decided to pass it over, hut in future to take action in all sucn eases, one of the Napier members stating that it cost £3 or £4 every time the brigade went out for such a cause. 'I he superintendent reported that no calls had been received during the quarter. A fireman, Mr. G. Duley, had tendered his resignation through receiving a position in Stratford, the vacancy having been filled by Mr. G. Howell as probationer. Six practices and parades had been held, and the attendance had been very satisfactory. On August ?,9 he visited Hastings and attended a conference of brigadesmen. It was decided to hold tlie next demonstration at Ilaveloek on October 17. • To show the need for telephone concessions a tally of calls was taken, tin; total being 159, namely, 30 in and 129 out. The outward calls were mostly made when telephoning tlie exchange for the morning time signal. Correspondence sent to Mr. J. S. Black regarding the erection of fire escapes at n North Clydo building, and to Amusements, Limited, about the alleged blocking of an alley-way was read. The superintendent said he was not sure if Mr. Black had done what he asked, and the matter was left in the former's hands. It was decided that if the theatre lessees did not carry out the board's requirements the superintendent should take action.

It was agreed to order four metal gas' masks.

The revenue for the quarter was £154 and the expenditure £126.
