WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
WAIROA MEETING Mrs. A. G. Nolan presided over a good attendance of members of ihe Wairoa Women's Institute. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mi-, and Mrs. Randal, all members standing in silence. It was stated that the Gisborne halfyearly meeting was put off until October 23. The branch decided to bold a picnic at Morero in November, the date to be fixed later. Mrs. llaskel gave a, demonstration on silk art decorating, which, members much appreciated. Sister May Gardiner was welcomed by the president, and the former gave a very interesting report on the Dominion conference and other institute matters. The competitions resulted: —Shopping basket.—Mrs. Gibbs. 1: Mrs. Simpson, 2; Mesdfimes Coker and Dickinson, tic, o. MATAWAI MEETING The Matawai Women's Institute meeting was hold on Thursday, having been postponed the previous week owing to bad weather. Mrs. Smith presided over :t fair attendance. Regret was felt at the resignation of Mrs. Dower, who is leaving the district. The roll call, "Cures for Corns," brought forth many suggestions. A demonstration in making and decorating parchment lamp-shades was given by Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Gibson read a concise educational paper on the kea. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Burgess and Mrs. Hargraves, and was followed by a good debate, "Should husbands help in tho house?" Mrs. Calcott, Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Ha: I graves had well-prepared argumen. in the affirmative, and Mrs. Fielder and Mrs. Smith, against, put up a gooc' protest, but the" affirmative won. The worked ilower spray competition was won by Mrs. McDonald, wi. Mrs. Gibson second.
