R.S.A. BALL PRESENTATION TO MRS. TAPLIN (1 Eoruld Correspondent.) Recently the*Gaicty Theatre, Ruatoria. was (he scene of a. very jolly gathering, the occasion being the R.S.A. annual ball. There, was the usual blight. "Digger" atmosphere, and the ball went with'a swing until (lancing concluded in the'early hours of the morning. People were present from for and near.

The decorations gave one the impression of a lovely spring garden, as right along the front of ihe stage were huge massed bowls of daffodils, while immediately above hung two New Zealand ensigns, the I'nion -lack and large bundles of coloured balloons. Tire Slipper (aides were a gorgeous sight of most artistically arranged bowls of Iceland poppies', 'daffodils and yellow jasmine. Ahs. 11. I-:, Williams was responsible for the decorations.

Messrs. T. A. Snelling and R. W. Ford capably carried out the. duties of M.C.s. .Music was supplied by the Night Owl orchestra, while much appreciated extras were jjlayed by Miss K. Beale ami Messrs. JI. Beale and R. Tahala. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. U. Kemp and Mrs. A. C. Wood, Lotttn Point. The Tai-Tokerau football team, who were first the guests at a dinner party given by -Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Reedy, were then the guests at the hail until slipper time. During the evening Mr. R. W. Ford, on behalf of the "Diggers," spoke, a few words of appreciation of Mrs. J. 11. Taplin for all she had done for them both during the war and ever since, and then presented her with a beautiful bouquet of stocks made by Mrs. P. W. Barrett. Three hearty cheers were given, and then all joined in the, singing of

"For She's A jolly Good Fellow." Mrs. Taplin suitably responded and called for three, hearty cheers for all the "Digger's" and their wives, who she sairl had done jusfc as much for the R.S.A. A sumptuous sit-down supper' was supplied by Ihe returned soldiers' wives. "God Save tho King" brought a very happy evening to a close. Those present included Mesdames J. 11. Taplin. P. G. On Wednesday night the Maoris were responsible for a very largely attended dance held in honour of Dr. R. N. Mackay. Both pakcha and Maori were present from Tfikornnru Bay up as far as Te Araroa.

Mrs. P. (!. Burton, who was responsible for the decorations, had the stage beautifully done with large bowls of daffodil ami yellow jasmine, while on a table .was a bowl of Iceland poppies. The supper tables were gay with vases of daffodil and marigolds. Music was supplied by the "Night Owl" orchestra, while extras were played by Mrs. J. M. M.eft'an, Miss K. Beiile, and .Mr. B. Tahata. Mr. Arnold Reedy capably carried out the duties of M.C.

During I lie first half of the programme Mrs. C. K. Williams delighted the audience with songs. A delicious home-made, supper was served.

After supper Air. Arnold Reedy, who spoke on behalf of the Maori community, praised Dr. Mackay for his valuable work on the Coast during the 10 years lie had been there, and said how much he would be missed. . lie concluded by presenting the guest of honour with a beautiful kiekie mat.

Mr.. C. K". Williams spoke on behalf of the pakehas. endorsing Mr. Eeedy's remarks. He presented Dr. Mackay

w ii!i u cheque. Or. Mackay, in reply, said he was extremely sorry to be leaving the district for ho had enjoyed his work on the Coast. He mentioned that the move ho worked amongst the Maoris the more he respected and loved them.

"For lie's a Jolly Oood Fellow" was sung, I hen dancing continued. During the second halt of the programme the "Uruahi" girls (Tikitiki), did a. delightful Maori action song. This was followed by Mr, A Reedy and his team, who also did Maori action songs.
