WAIROA BOATING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING THE YOUNG MEN KEEN (Herald Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Wairoa Boating Club was held in the Wairoa. Lire Brigade station on Thursday night, there being present Mr. L. Gay, chairman, and about 20 or 30 other young men apparently all keen on rowing for this season. Only one of the old-time rowers was present to give his advice, so that this season rowing is practically in the hands of the young men. The statement of accounts showed that the liabilities totalled £'l2B, against, assets of a. similar amount, the loss on the year's working being £l6 16s 2d, after the writing off of £6 2s 4d on the shed ami £2l 17s on plant. The shed now stood at £2so'. which was a, very conservative figure. The chairman drew a comparison between fiie. state of things generally last year, when the subscriptions went down by half ami also the dance receipts, and predicted a. much better season. Yelverton and J. W. B. Macdonald; managing committee, Messis. B. Sharpe, O. MeCorkindale, R. Home. J. H. Scott, N. J. Smith, G. Logan. L. Gay; handicap committee. Messrs. W. Martin, G. Logan and L. Gay; selection committee, Messrs. W. Martin, G Logan and L. Cay; starter. Mr. J. IT Scott. ' The following new members were elected: Messrs. J. O'Connell, L. Allen, C. Dalzell, A. B. .Smith. C. W. Hague, C. Hill, R. Goodley. .1. Foster, A. Foster, .1. Parkinson, and D. Hooper. The selection of a social committee was left to the management committee. OPENING DATE FIXED The opening date was fixed for Monday. October 26, Labour Day, and a i suggestion that on the two previous Saturdays special races should be rowed on the up-river course, the selectors to pick the crews for the Saturday before the opening day, and on the other days the men. to row as they desired. This was made a recommendation to the incoming committe. It was left to the general committee to decide on the question of permitting the ladies to use the club's boats occasionally, members generally being favourable to this course when the boats were not otherwise in use.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to all the last season's workers, and on the motion of Mr. H. Trewby, it was decided to set up a committee comprising Messrs. J. S. Gilligan, B. Sharpe, T. Crawford, A. Crane and J. 11. Scott to write up the history of the club from its earliest clays for the New Zealand Rowing Journal, Mr. H. Trewby being appointed the club's correspondent. It was decided to meet at the weekend to put the shed, boats and grounds in order, the chairman stating that the prospect of the L.V.A. Shield contest being held in' Wairoa was very hearten-

ing. Mr. Gilligan inquired in regard to last year's trophies, stating that they should be all got in and presented at the opening night dance. The opening day arrangements are in the hands of the committee.

Votes of thanks were passed to the chairman, the Fire Brigade, and the press.

DOUGLAS JOSEPH CHICKEN TROPHY

Mr. Harold Trewby, in a very sympathetic letter, announced his donation of a handsome silver trophy as a memorial of the late Mr. D. J. Chicken, one of the club's most valued members. The trophy look the form of an oarsman mounted on a pedestal and carrying an oar. It was, the letter stated, for competition on handicap among single scullers, to be held till the winner was beaten, and both challengers and holders could bo re-handicapped at any time, either before or after the race. The course would be a mile.

The drafting of rules was left in the hands of Mr. Trewby, to whom a vote of thanks was tendered.
