PENALTY OF CRIME
PRISONERS SENTENCED ASSAULT IN GISBORNE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Prisoners were sentenced to-day by Mr. Justice Smith. John Valentine Proctor, aged 30 years, a labourer and showman, for assault with intent, to rob in Gisborne, was sentenced to reformative detention for two years. Frank Filzwilliams, aged 45, a labourer, who was charged with the same offence as Proctor and was regarded as the ringleader, was sentenced to gaol for a year with hard labour and was. warned of the possibility of his being declared an habitual criminal. John Tabu Anaru, aged 26, farm labourer, for breaking and entering and theft at Napier, was sentenced to reformative detention for two years and was warned of the possibility of being declared an habitual criminal.
Christopher Leonard Jansen, aged 45, storeman and labourer, for indecent assault on a male, was sentenced on five charges to terms of four and three years’ imprisonment, the. terms to be concurrent.
William Joseph Gee, aged 30, a cook, for breaking and entering and theft and breaking and entering with intent, was sentenced to gaol with -hard labour for four years and two years, the terms to be concurrent.
Lionel John Lynch, aged 21, a clerk, for forging and uttering, was sentenced to Reformative detention for two and a half years, to bo served concurrently with a sentence at present- being served.
