The axe and fire stick had been used far too much in New Zealand, and as ti result thousands of acres of the most magnificent scenery had been ruined, said Mr. Parry. Many acres of country had been denuded ol growth, and as a result of that the country was being called upon to-day to spend hundreds of thousands oi pounds to clear rivers of silt sent down off the hills.

SIGNS OF HAPPINESS Mr. Parry added that men working in the bush and the workers generally were a pleasure to meet. To-day they were all pleased and happy, and when ntfln showed their happiness in that manner, it was some compensation for the work that had been done on their behalf.

“It is a Godsend to meet people happy in their work,’’ added the Minister. “That is want we want, and what we ,aro trying to create in Now Zealand. We do not belong to any one section of the community. The duty of the Government is to see that the results of the labour of Unpeople are more equitably distributed than in the past.”

The Minister stated that the Government’s recent legislation had created a feeling of hope in the minds of the people, who were working to-day as thev had never worked before.

The Minister and his party arrived in Wairoa yesterday afternoon from Rotorua, having spent the night at Wniknromoana, where a breakdown with the car caused a delay in the arrival of the party here.
