Highway votes for the Dominion exceed iho total of last year bv nearly £1, 000,000:

The public works estimates, tabled 111 the House of Representatives to-day, provide for £2,752,000 to be spent on highways, compared with £1,810,000 voted last year. The total spent last year exceeded the amount voted, and totalled £1,892,550, plus £213,990 credits in hand, bringing tho total expenditure to £2,106,540. Credits in hand this year amount to £IOO,OOO, and the total required to be voted will be reduced by that amount.

Gisborne’s share is £120,000' from the main highways account, compared with £88,256 actually spent last year. New construction will absorb £50,000, or just, double the amount actually spent on new works last year, but a slight decrease in maintenance is provided for, t he total being £61,000, compared with £63,020 spent last' year. Votes renewed total £9OOO.

The position in the Gisborne highway district is shown in the following table :

Last year, a total of £43,046 was voted for highway construction in the district, but only £23,236 was spent. The Tauranga highway district lias been voted £35,000 for construction, against £13,992 voted last year and £4791 spent, while £12,000 is renewed and £70,000 is provided for maintenance, compared with £102,264 spout last year. The Hawke’s Bay district is voted £55,000 for construction, while £32,0-14 was voted last year and £25,517 spent; while £21,000 is renewed and £73,000 is set- down for maintenance, compared with £85,440 spent last year.
