FRENCH REPLY TO HITLER
TERMS NOT ACCEPTABLE SOVIET PACT TO STAND LONDON, Aug. 28. The Paris correspondent of The Times says that the German Minister of Economy, Dr. Schacht, during discussions with the French Ministers in Paris, argued that for 'financial, economic, and military reasons Germany was compelled to continue the process of rearmament. The remedies he suggested were: — (1) Financial relief by “currency alignment” and the development of trade. (2) The return of the German colonies, thus opening up fresh markets and enabling Germany to obtain supplies of raw r materials. (3) Tlie renunciation of the FrancoRussian Pact; otherwise the present German policy and the dangers it entailed would continue. The French answer regarding currency alignment and the return of the colonies was that others must first be consulted, while regarding uie FrancoRussian Pact, France would not renounce it, nor would accept any arrangement dividing Europe into separate or watertight compartments. Herr Hitler’s military service decree had strengthened, not weakened, that resolve. The French Government is expected shortly to draw Britain’s attention to the large increase in the German army, also to ask the Soviet the reason for the lowering of the conscription age. FALSE ESPIONAGE CHARGE GERMAN AVIATRIX MOSCOW PRESS TIRADE (Reed. Aug. 29, 11 a.m.) BERLIN, Aug. 28. A German aviatrix, Thea Rasche, who was reported to have been arrested as a Russian spy, has complained to the police, who "are seeking the originators of the story, which has no foundation. A Moscow report states that the fzvestia furiously attacks Dr. Goebbels, the German Minister of Propaganda, and General Himmler, leader of Storm Troops, as “lying Fascist bandits” who, the journal alleges, are “bloodthirstily propagating discord against Russia to conceal their own dirty machinations in Spain.” QUEST FOR TERRITORY CAMPAIGN OF NAZIS LONDON, Aug. 28. The Daily Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent transmits a detailed dispatch to the effect that the Nazis are preparing elaborate propaganda in the autumn to recover lost territory in Czechoslovakia. Dr. Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda, has issued secret instructions to the local Nazi leaders throughout Germany, stating the arguments to be advanced.
