GARDENING CIRCLE

TE KARAKA MEETING Members of the gardening circle of tlie Te Karaka Women’s Institute met at the home of the convener, Aliss Dir, Kanakanaia, on Thursday afternoon and spent a happy time. It was decided to purchase gladiolus bulbs and distribute them amongst the members. The schedule for the bulb show oil September 17 was discussed and it was decided that the challenge howl donated by Airs. P. J. Sefton should be awarded to the institute—Paha, Whatatutu, or Te Karaka—gaining the most points in ’the decorative section, and not to an individual member as perhaps the schedule might indicate. Further donations of prizes were received for the following classes-.—Sec-tion 111, class 34, miniature rock garden.—Mrs. Rowland Graham’s special prize. Section IV, class 45, Victorian posies.—Aliss L. Orr’s special. Children’s section. —laped and initialled tea-towels, Airs. J. Atkins’ trophy ; embroidered apron, Airs. F. Olsen’s trophy ; mounted native leaves, Mrs. J. Atkins trophy; piece of woodwork, Mrs. J Atkins’ trophy. After the business had been concluded members followed with interest a practical demonstration in floral work given by Miss M. A. Burgess, each step being shown in the making of wreaths, \ ietorian posies and bouquets. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrator. A delectable afternoon tea was served and appreciation for .Miss Orr’s hospitality was expressed before the members departed for borne.
