FAST BOWLING WRANGLE

COUNTY CONTROVERSY ANSWER TO FREEMAN (Reed. Aug. 27. 2 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 26. "Coming at such a time. Freeman's criticism of Karnes is the more scandalous and disgraceful," declares the secretary of the Essex Cricket Club, in reference to the. trouble over a newspaper article in which A. P. Freeman, reviewing the Essex-Kent cricket match at Southend, and obviously referring to K. Fames, the Essex bowler, stated: "Jt is not often that professional cricketers complain, but. the bowling of a. certain Essex amateur, in our opinion, was definitely unfair." The Essex'club secretary says he was present at the match, and he completely denies Freeman's allegations of unfair bowling. "Perhaps one. answer to Freeman's comment would be the pitiable, display of some of the Kent batsmen against, the fast bowling the last time they met it," he concludes. Wilcox, the Essex captain, said: "In my opinion Fames bowled well and fairly. ' Tlie Daily Mail's sporting gossip writer says: tr J have, yet to watch a fast bowler who is not guilty of short, bumpers sometimes, but the suggestion that Fames bumps five out of six balls is a gross exaggeration. Fames would not have been chosen for Australia if the selectors noted the least cause for suspicion in his action."
