WORKERS IN HOTELS

DOMINION DISPUTE HOURS AND CONDITIONS CONCILIATION PROBLEM i (Per Press Association.) ' WELLINGTON, this day. A Dominion dispute between the New Zealand Federated Hotel and tt'esttiurant Employees' Industrial Association of Workers and Mrs. Olelland, of the Trocadcro Hotel, Wellington, and others was before the Conciliation Council 10-day. Tlie commissioner, Mr. M. .1. Reunion, at the outset look exception lo the inclusion of two tradesmen, a carpenter and an engineer, as assessors for the applicants when they should have been employees in the trade. Mr. young, of Auckland, for the applicants, said that it was rather late to'raise the point, as both had travelled considerable distances, one from Invorcargill. It was sufficient for tin assessor to have once worked in the industry. The commissioner insisted that it was his duty to carry out the law, and finally allowed the choice of only one of these representatives. WEEK OF 44 HOURS The assessors for the applicants are Mr. Young, of Auckland, the advocate, and Messrs. Brookes, of Christchureh, O'Malley, of Wellington, Kelly, of Dunedin, Proven, of Invercargill, and Miss Mitchell, of Nelson. Those for the employers are Messrs. Greenfield, of Rotorua, Elsbury, of Auckland, Hughes, of Wangariui, Manson and Jameson, of Christchureh, O'Reilly, of Wellington, and Williamson, of Dunedin, with Mr. Mouutjoy as advocate. The claim is for a 44-hour week, with not more than eight hours to be worked on a day, the workers not to be brought buck after a day's work until after an interval of 12 hours, time and a-half to be paid for such time as might be curtailed, no employee to work after S p.m. on the day preceding his day off, and a full 24-hour holiday and one half-day each week. These and other hours and conditions demanded placed the employers in the position, of being unable to agree to discuss the 19."»1 wages, which the commissioner mentioned would probably be insisted on by the court, ami the proceedings so far are leading nowhere.
