OPERATION AT SEA
OFFICERS' EXPERIENCE
DURBAN, July 5.
The chief officer and purser of _ the steamer City of Paris had the unique cxnerionw of assisting at an operation during the last voyage of the: ship to Durban. One of the frromon suffered a serious head injury in an accident in the stokehold and the next day his face, was found to be partly paralysed. The ship's doctor called for volunteers to help him in an operation. In addition to tho ship's officers mentioned, a doctor among the. passengers agreed to give tho patient an anaesthetic.. A.severed nerve in, the head of-the unfortunate fireman was rejoined and bv the time the vessel arrived at port the man had almost recovered and permanent paralysis of his face was prevented.
