ALLEGATION OF LIBEL
£SOOO DAMAGES SOUGHT ACTION BY McCARTEN SYDNEY, Aug. 21. The hearing of a libel suit involving a claim for £SOOO damages against Thomas George Hopkins and others of the sporting paper Newsletter, brought by the jockey Maurice McCarten, began in the Supreme Court in Sydney to-day before Mr. Justice Owen. It is creating much interest in turf circles.--
McCarten denied suggestions of malpractices attributed: by the Newsletter and defended his records as a jockey. Leading officials of the Australian Jockey Club gave evidence that McCarten was' an "ornament to the turf." The hearing has not been completed.
