NEW STOCK ROUTE

COAST TO GISBORNE AVOIDING THE BITUMEN RAIL FROM MAKAR-AKA A proposal to form a stock route from the Glenroy turn-off, on the Coast road, to Valley'road, Mnngapapa, was laid before the monthly meeting of Hie Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers Union to-day in a letter from Mr. W. Hay, who suggested this as one means of keeping stock off the bitumen roads of the county and- borough. Stock from the flats, he‘suggested, should he railed from Makaraka to avoid congestion in tile town. The letter was sent originally to the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association, whose secretary, Mr. W. E. Chamberlain, forwarded" it to the Farmers’ Union as a. body more interested in stieh a proposal.

The route outlined was as follows

“Leaving the Coast road on the bank of the Pouawa Stream at the Glenroy turn-off, thence almost in .a straight line through the Turihaua and Rimuroa runs to the ford across the Waimata just above the Hole-in-the-Wall, thence on to Riverside road, then over the ridge to join the Happy Valley and Mangapapa roads on to the back Ormond road near the Memorial Home.

“The whole distance,” the letter stated, “is about 13 miles, compared with about 18 miles routicl the present road along the Coast and through the borough to the same point. The suggested road is through all easy country, well watered and most suitable for close settlement-.

“Also, by combining Darwin road, only a short distance to join this road by the ford would make it suitable for the freezing works. Cattle from this end of the district also could go to the works. It would only mean about a half-day longer, and they would reach the works almost any hour of the day, instead of at present having to rush them through the town over the bitumen and bridges to get them delivered in the early morning, “As for sheep from the Hats, why not use the railway from Makaraka, and thus save all stock from travelling over the borough streets. Having been a drover myself, I can thoroughly recommend this plan.”
