TALKS WITH JAPAN

TRADE NEGOTIATIONS AUSTRALIA WILLING (Reed. Aug. 21, 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 20. Replying to the statement of the spokesman of the Japanese Government that Japan was awaiting Australia’s proposals for the resumption of trade negotiations, Sir Henry Gullett, the Minister in charge of trade treaties, said that the Commonwealth Government was ready and willing to resume negotiations with the Japanese representatives, but according to the Japanese Consul-Gen-eral in Australia, lie had not received any instructions from his Government on the subject. A Tokio message says it is learned that the Nippon Yusen Line is withdrawing another Australian freighter. An official of the company said the ships bound for Australia were getting plenty of cargo, but were returning nearly empty.
