WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD OR. RICKARD RESIGNS ROAD FORMATION The resignation of Or. V. G. 11 Rickard was received at this week’s meeting of the Waiapu County Council held at Te Puia. Cr. I). \V. W. Williams was in the chair, and the others present were Crs. M. Hyland, R. G Sherwood-Hale, H. H. Fairlie, I'. R Jell'erd, 11. Williams, and S. Goldsmith. An apology for absence was received from Cr. J. Busby. The estimates for the year were received from the Waiapu Hospital Board and, although they were remarked upon as being rather heavy, were passed for payment. It was reported that no assistance was forthcoming from the Government in connection with flood damage. The chairman said that as the letter was not clear regarding the subsidy he had instructed the clerk to write to the member for the district, Dir. A. G. Ilultquist, for further particulars. Mr. Hultquist- had replied that he would communicate with tlie Minister of public Works, and the Hon. R. Semple wrote stating that lie would look into the matter. The letters were received.

A letter from Mr. Maliarata Te Owai requested payment as arranged for the use of the land on which the crusher was erected near the -Makarika turnoil’. On the motion of Cr. D. W. W. Williams, seconded by Cr. Goldsmith, it was decided to reply that the matter was being investigated. The council was invited by the provisional provincial council for the centenary celebrations to appoint two members' to attend a meeting in Gisborne, and the chairman stated that he and Cr. Sherwood-Hale had attended the meeting on behalf of the council. Their action was confirmed.

An inquiry as to what was being done about the metalling of his road was received from Mr. John Vf alkcr, and it was decided to reply that information regarding grants and subsidies from the Public Works Department was not yet available.

Correspondence from Dir. A. J. Fry, Ruatoria, in connection with the Tuparoa-Reporua road, stated that the settlers had raised £2O for the forma-tion-of the road and asked for the council to give a subsidy of a like amount so that the culverts could he completed. Dir. Frv also stated that he understood the proprietors of the Tokaroa block were willing to contribute £ls towards the formation. Cr. D. W. W. Williams stated that he had referred the letter to the district engineer, Dir. O. G. Thornton, who had said that the work probably could be put on the supplementary estimates. It was decided to write to Mr. Fry asking if the other £ls was available before taking any definite steps.

Messrs. Nolan and Skeet wrote reporting on the council’s ease against Mr. John Ward in connection with a. broken bridge. It was stated that the council was awarded damages to the extent of £175 14s, and costs. Dis-

bursements and witnesses’ expenses were to lie settled by the registrar. The chairman stated that the costs allowed were insufficient by £SO to cover the council’s legal expenses and ho suggested that the balance of the damages after all fees had been paid should he allotted to the expenses of the new bridge and an application made to the Main Highways Board for a £.'! for £1 subsidy.
