Radio Problems

TN the course of investigations into the problems of radio transmission the Australian Radio Research Board has studied conditions in tho upper atmosphere. Bulletin No. .101 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research contains a paper l.»y Dr. D. F. Afnrfyn ami Dr. O. O. Pulley, in which it is concluded that temperatures in the regions, from (50 to lot) miles above the earth reach 1000 degrees centigrade, the values remaining unchanged in summer or winter, although considerable cooling occurs during tho night. It is the cooling that is responsible for the changes in ionisation and hence the oti'cct ,of those regions on radio waves. Below this hot layer and about f>o miles above the earth there is a cold layer where luminous night, clouds of ice crystals form. At about. *lO miles the air is warmer, but below this the temperature falls again.
