Y.M.C.A. ACTIVITIES

CLASSES IN FULL SWING

FAIR IN SEPTEMBER

All activities in the Y.M.C.A.'s programme are now in full swing. A meeting of representatives!, of the membership and board was held recently to discuss the preliminary arrangements for a Spring Fair, which is to take place early in September. 1 he boys' division has a total membership of 102 and meets regularly each Saturday at 6.30 p.m. for Bible study, educational talks or visits and gymnasium games. On Saturday last 100 boys visited Messrs. 0. Aitken and Son's timber mill and were keenly interested i'i the working of the modern equipment used in preparing timber for its various uses. A practical demonstration was given on each machine and a running commentary on. each process was given by Mr. H. J. Poole. The harmonica band continues to do excellent work under Mr. A. Mitchell and at the moment five of the members of the band are under special training for the New Zealand harmonica championship to be held in Auckland next month.

Three hockey teams have been entered by the association. this year and each team is giving a good account of itself.

The total placings of unemployed boys to date is 647 and several more boys are available for town work and two for the country. The Scontr and cubs are doing excellent work and the roll strength is being well -maintained. All gymnasium classes are working well. Mr. Forster, the hon. physical director, reports that increases have been evidenced in the membership of three classes, intermediate boys, junior B boys and junior girls. ' The. association Tias decided to make its annual Red Triangle Day appeal on Friday, August 14, and confidently anticipates that with brighter conditions the. public will make a ready response to the call.

The financing of the association has caused the directors gravo concern during recent years. With increased membership and low fees, which cover but onefifth of the total running cost, it is necessary that added! public support must be forthcoming if the association is jo continue its programme. It is doing what it considers to be' a useful work among the youth of the community and it.would be a matter for much regret if public apathy should bring about a cessation or restriction of its activities.
