ANNIVERSARY OBSERVED

SERVICE AT TE WAIROA

(Par Prwsa Association.) RGTCffi.UA, this day. An. interesting ceremony took place ai To Wairoa, overlooking Lalce Tarawera. yesterday, when the Bishop of Aote.lroa. the lU.'Rev. ,F, A. Bennett, conducted a, commemoration service for the 15C Maoris and Europeans who perished in tin? Tarawera eruption on the. night Oi June 10, 1886.

The service was held ill a small, bush clearing on the site of the oldi church. which was one of a number of buildingdemolished by the eruption. Among the congregation were a number of elderly Maoris who were, living at Te Wairoa at the time of the eruption. An old bell which was sounded before the service was recently recovered from tho ruins of the old church by a. grandson of the Rev. IS. M. Spencer, who commenced work among the .Maoris at T< Wairoa nearly 100 years ago. At a subsequent meeting, the Tuhou rangi tribe discussed plans for erectiu.v. a suitable memorial on. the site of the church, 'ibis will probably take the form of a suitably carved canopy under which the old church bell .will Jj« hung.
