"FALSE CHIVALRY"

SCAPEGOATS IN DIVORCE

BISHOP'S CONDEMNATION

LONDON, May 29.

The Bishop of Winchester strongly criticised the practice of men making themselves scapegoats in divorce cases, during a debate at the convocation on the Church of England's attitude of marriage problems. He declared that certain circles with a perverted sense of chivalry sometimes expected a man, though innocent, to take the blame.

"I find it difficult to .say which to condemn, the more strongly—the weakness of the man who adopts such a course, or the meanness of the woman expecting him to adopt, it," the bishop said. "Generally speaking, however, those whom the courts regard as innocent are people with the sad and bitter experience. It is impossible' in justice and charity to refuse the Communion, although adequate safeguards are necessary. It would bo disastrous if it were considered that the church is weakening in her attitude to adultery." The convocation appointed a committee to consider whether divorced people were admissible to Communion.
