The Derby resulted: — Mahmoud (Smirkc) •. . • 1 Taj Altbar (Richards) .. 2 Thaiikcrton (Burns) .. ■’ Twenty - two started. Won by three lengths, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Although a larger crowd than ever gathered at Epsom, the exodus from London is later every year. During the morning the roads were little busier than normal. Heavy clouds and a chilly wind made it an overcoat Derby. There were fewer Gipsies to be seen on the Down's. They are last disappearing, and declare that the Derby is becoming more select every year. After lunch, the crowd, believed to be a record, stretched in a solid mass from Tottenham Corner to the grand stand.

MAGNIFICENT RACE The Derby was a magnificent race, and Mahmoud’s time was a record. The jockey, Charlie Smirke, does not know the meaning of nerves. He displayed superb coolness and judgment. He did not attempt to force the pace. Carioca was early away and led at the half-mile from Midstream and Pay Up. Thnnkerton stole the lead down the hill from Bala Ilissar and Pay Up, and was three lengths ahead into the straight, but was unable to stay. Mahmoud shot up, Taj Akbar gallantly attempting to overhaul his stable companion, but Mahmoud won easily. The crowd, frenzied with excitement, cheered the Aga Khan, who led in the beautiful grey horse which is only the third of that colour to win the Derby. The Aga Khan, overcome with delight, said he had realised his ambition to win the Derby three times.
