BELATED WAR QUERY
“RENT FOR TRENCHES” SLANDER REFUTED LONDON, April 8. Mr. Neville Chamberlain stated in the House of Commons yesterday that no payments were made to either France or. Belgium for the occupation of, or disturbance to, land in the battle area during the 'Great War, whether for trenches or otherwise. Outside the battle area payments to about eight million were made for billeting, rent and occupation of land to France. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, who was replying to a question by Mr. Sexton (Soc., Barnard Castle) added that in the case of Belgium certain payments were also made, but they were not to n very large amount. Mr. Churchill : Is it not a fact that, the British Government, on entering into the war, adopted the principle that their armies would pay all the expenses of the operations of the campaign they were conducting, and has not this suggestion that rent was extracted for the trenches been a prominent feature in slanders against France?
