At last night's meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association, Mr. E. Grant, a. member of the New Zealand University Rugby team that toured Japan, gave a short lecture, on •‘Refereeing in Japan.” He said that in the early games of the tour the referees’ interpretations of various Jaws as known by players and followers of (he game in New Zealand were quite foreign to the team and as the referee and the .Japanese players were unable to speak English it was not. until after the game that tin understanding was possible. However. said Mr. Grant, by tbe time the linn I test was played, the rulings and general refereeing bad greatly improved. Mr. Grant's collection of photographs anil newspaper cuttings were of considerable interest. Mr. K. If. Waite, chairman of (lie association, expressed the referees’ appreciation of Mr. Grant’s most interesting talk.
