DAIRY PRODUCE

NEW MARKETING POLICY BEADY-MADE M AOIIINERY BOARD’S PUTI'BE POSITION (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, tiiis day. The thoroughgoing! development ot the control board system in connection with ,\iv. Zealand s'principal exportable products provides the Government with readv-made machinery tor carrying out its new mai'keting policy. Though at present confined to dairypro, lmts. the Marketing Department, it it extended its operations to meat, would to take over from the Meat I’rodueers’ Board a staff having a long experience in respect In Heights, llie alloc.i----i ion ol shipping Incililics. and loading dales, and a London staff thoroughly iu touch with marketing conditions.

Except for the announcement that Mr. C, A. Duncan, the dairying expert- on tile Executive Commission ot Agriculture. is to be act ing-Dii eotor of Marketing. there Inis been no organisation of the new department, no doubt tor the reason that the Hairy Board'? staffs in New Zealand and London will form a very substantial nucleus for the department. One of its principal officers was a member of the committee appointed by the Government- to report hilly on the administrative details of marketing under the guaranteed price system. The hoard has been responsible for all shipping! aiTiiiigenients. insurance on dairy produce, negotiation ol freights, and a good deal of the handling details in London, so that, for its employees the change means simply a. new controlling authority. The Dairy Board will continue to function along greatly modified lines, the Government’s view being that ji will he of value in reflecting the opinion of producers. There, seems to have been no definite development iti respect to local marketing. although there is ample time before August 1 to complete details of a scheme for the allocation of supplies at controlled prices. The latter aspect cannot he dealt with m.til the overseas guaranteed price is announced.

Il is reported that (here lias been a wide divergence of opinion over the methods to lie followed in local marketing. (he plans for which range from com. idem purchase bv the State io a form of regulation of prices at all stages of

liandliii:'. leaving the distribution to lie carried out hv firms which have built up good connections with the retailers.
