TE KARAKA SOCIAL lIUSP.ANDS’ EVENING Owing to counter-attractions, and also, n<> doubt, to 11 ip inclement weather, there was not a large attendance on Friday at the social evening, complimentary to husbands and friends, organised by the To Karaka Women’s Institute. However, the function was. a very jolly one, and the programme submitted being varied and enjoyable. Card enthusiasts enjoyed a flag fivehundred contest controlled by Mr. S. Smithers, Misses M. Ribbon ami K. Castles and Messrs. A. Ft eel and (". Ribbon carrying off the first- awards, while other prizes went to Mr. and Mrs. Robinson., Mrs. W. Parsons and Mr. J. V. Castles, While the cards were in progress, Miss M. Steel conducted two competitions for non-players, the prizes for these being won by Mrs. Manuel and Mrs. 11. O'Connell respectively. Accompanied at the piano by Mrs. O’Connell. Miss Makareta Morris charmingly rendered a musical monologue, and to satisfy the prolonged applause, gave an amusing sketch on happenings at a football match.

Two one act plays were submitted by the drama circle. The. first, ’TTazekiali Helps.” a limnomus ‘'skit” on institute work, was performed by Mrs. 11. Allen as Annie, and Mrs. If. Swainson as llezekiah. The second. “Geysers, Limited,” had for its cast Miss M. fcitccl as Mrs. Mansfield. Mrs. F. Hobbs as Mr. Mansfield. Miss J. Reel as Pringle, Mrs. S. Smithers as Watson, Mrs. B. Swainson as Wainwriglit, and Mrs. B. McCauley as Miss Dorset. This play was a comedy voncerning office life.

(fames were enjoyed and after a tasty supper had been served, dancing to music supplied by Miss M. Morris and Mr. K. .Morris, was enjoyed till a late hour. During the evening Miss O. Tnapawa, winner of a competition in connection with the Plunkel 'baby photographic exhibition was presented with a beautiful flower bowl.

MAY MEETING The May meeting of the Waerenga-a-hika Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday in the Parish Hall, Mrs. Barrow presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors. Two new members were enrolled, Mrs. Kimbor and Miss Warrington, while visitors were Mesdamcs Snowsill, Dixon. Witters, Wallace, Misses Lister. Dixon and Long. A most, interesting letter was read by Mrs. D. Tunic from the new link, flic f’nlnbogie Women’s Institute, of South Renfrew. Its programme for the year was enclosed and gave members a good idea of the work of overseas institutes-

The council delegate, Airs. Carr, made her report on the recent council meeting and was accorded a vote of thanks. It was decided to augment, the votes of the Institute Plunket baby. Lloyd Brown, in the present competition and also to make a presentation to Eric Torrie, the first institute baby. There was no kick of demonstrations. Miss O. Long demonstrated a crossstitch cottage apron, Mrs. Barrow a toilet set with Chinese lacquer and wiix. while thi' making of sea-grass stools shown by Miss Dixon was most instructive. All were accorded a vote ol thanks.
