TROUBLED FINANCE EAST COAST UNION BIG RECOVERY EFFORT An unsatisfactory condition of the union's finances was disclosed at the annual meeting of the East Coast Rugby Union, when it was shown that £B7 was owing to various creditors, and that for the time being the treasurer had no funds with which to meet these liabilities. The delegates decided upon a concerted and sustained effort to improve. matters during the coming season, concerning which the prospects were stated: to be bright. ,'; It was pointed put that two former* Coast representatives, in Bill Collins and T. Rfiid, had achieved All Black honours, while five. Maori players from the Coast>; G. Nepia,'K. Reedy* J'. Reedy, H. Keiv shaw, and H. Harrison, had been selected as Maori All Blacks .for the Australian tour of the 1935 season. The representative team had had a fairly successful season, having defeated Poverty Bay twice, and the Bay of Plenty team once, tihough. it 'was twice 'unsuccessful against the Wairoa representatives. The union decided to take every possible step to promote interest in inter-sub-union games, and in the development of. new talent among the younger men of the Coast. A scheme for home-and-home matches between sub-union teams, either independent of or in conjunction with the usual challenge games for the various tro. : . phies, was debated at some length,; and then referred to the sub-union committees,, while several other plans for improving the standard of compe-: tition were put forward for consider-: ation. • ' 1

It was. decided that only • three selectors should be appointed for the new season, partly owing to a desire to economise in the matter of travek ling fees, and partly because the multiplicity of selectors in the past year had to prove unwieldy. .:,.
