TRADE WITH BRITAIN

EFFORTS FOR EXPANSION DP. PAGE'S ACTIVITIES LONDON, April 5. Lancashire cotton traders will submit plans shortly to the ' Australian Minister of Commerce, Dr. Earle Page, for a mutual expansion of trade between Australia and Lancashire. Dr. Page, who has just returned from a visit to Manchester and Staffordshire, intends to return to Lancashire bearing the Commonwealth's replies to the suggestions, which he hopes will lead to a satisfactory arrangement. "I found the cotton traders in Lancashire most sympathetic and eager to help," said Dr. Page. "They realise .that a lot can be done on both sides. We are submitting suggestions for a greater sale of Australian produce in the industrial districts."

Dr. Page will examine similar proposals from the potteries, Staffordshire's industrial areas. In an address to prominent business men at Stoke-on-Trent he said he could not understand why Englishmen paid more for Danish 'butter than for Australian. As the leader of the Country Party, Dr. Page said his object was to establish the maximum of reciprocal trade between Australia and Britain. It was to the advantage of the British manufacturer to develop Australian trade before Australia's secondary industries expanded. Ho said the. cotton traders he met in Manchester appreciated the reception given to Sir Ernest Thompson's recent mission to Australia.

The air mail discussions are still held up pending the arrival of new figures from Canberra.
