MANAWATU OUTBREAK I EGG YIELD AFFECTED ■:':'■ ■ (Per Press Association.) ," PALMERSTON N., this day. ,• The disease of poultry known as. fowlpox is at present very prevalent in the Manawatu district, and although the mortality rate is low, the complaint is causing a number of deaths. >< Th«» affected birds go, off in condition and do not lay for periods of from three weeks to six months. Affecting mainly pullets, the disease is very contagious, and its spread is helped by mosquitoes. There is no remedy, the disease having to ran its course.
Vaccination when the birds are 16 weeks old is a preventive, but there are no vaccine supplies available in the Dominion. In Australia, it is compulsory to vaccinate pullets before they are sent to laying contests. A predisposing, cause of the disease is infection from intestinal worms and bad sanitation.
