(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa. branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union is not meeting this month owing to an earlier meeting of the executive. Members of the play-reading circle of Hie Wairoa Women's Institute spent a pleasant evening at the home of Mrs. IL Yelverton. for (he. first, reading of the season. Three plays were read, "Ghosts on Christmas Eve," "Embankment" and "Ebb and Flow," the parts being taken by Mesdames Eastou, lleywood. Ilighett and .Yelverton, and Misses Buchanan, Cam, Coleman, Edser, Kenny, Malcolm and Wharmby. A dainty supper was provided, the hostesses being Mesdames Yelverlou and lleywood anil Miss L. Cam. The wind-up of the urickel season was celebrated at Marumaru bv a dance al the Opouiti woolshed. ' The Regal orchestra provided the music, and during the. evening thanks were voted to all who had helped to make such a pleasant evening. The vexed question of permits for temporary premises occupied a good deal of lime at the Borough Council meeting. Dr. E. I!. Jardine and Messrs. R. M. McDonald and I), if. Withers waited on tho council on. behalf of the Wairoa Tennis Club and Wairoa Gymnasium Club, asking for an extension of the permit for the temporary premises known as the "Duck Inn." The speakers put up a strong case for relief, having a. loss of about £54. mainly as a result of the death of His late Majesty King George and the granting of another license; neither of the clubs could face the deficit, except by appealing to tlio public. If three months' extension was granted they might pull through. The -Mayor, Mr. 11. L. Darker, was favourable to granting four .Saturday nights, exclusive of Easter Saturday. Cr. (Icmniell seconded the motion. Eventually, after all members had given their views on temporary permits, the motion was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it. At the Borough Council meeting a letter was read from the Cook County Council asking for the representation of Wairoa at a proposed conference in Cisliorne to consider rating questions find the spread of ragwort.— The Mayor was appointed delegate.
