15 SEAMEN MISSING
ALLEGED “HELL-SHIP” TROUBLE ON SIMONSIDE (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. When the steamer Simonside left New Plymouth for Westport to-night, her crew was about In fewer than that with which she arrived from Auckland.
When the ship was ready to sail, several firemen and seamen were found to be missing, and the vessel pulled out into the stream, it being stated that a launch would take the men out, if they reported. When the pilot launch returned after the ship had been piloted out, however, it was stated that it had been decided to sail immediately.
When at Auckland recently, several members of the crew were prosecuted for refusal to obey orders. The captain then complained that it was the worst crew he had ever sailed with, and the men retorted with allegations that the Simonside was a “hell-ship.”
