TEN-MILE MINE TUNNEL
IN DEE LEAD FIELDS
BIG DRAINAGE SCHEME

The most, ambitious scheme of mine drainage by tunnelling ever undertaken in tliis country is approaching its final stages near hero. It consists of driving a 10-mile tunnel, at a cost of £250,000, from Bagillt, on the Dee estuary, into the limestone hills of Flintshire, -where lead has been mined since at least Roman times.
The tunnel is approximately at sea level, its object being to free an important group of mines from the cl'ironic Hooding to which their lower levels are now subject. In addition, il large number-of old mines, at present totally unworkable, will be brought into use, and new lodes are expected to be opened up.
