GAOL FOR 75 YEARS
SENTENCE OF NEGRO DEATH PENALTY WAIVED NEW YORK, Jan. 23.
A jury, at Decatur, Alabama, to-day found Heywood Patterson, a negro, guilty of criminal assault on two white women and condemned him t 0.75 years" imprisonment. In this celebrated case, in which nine negro youths were jointly accused, Patterson was three times previously found guilty and sentenced to death, only to have" the convictions overruled by the Supreme Court. The remaining eight defendants, all under death sentences, will likewise be retried.
