AEROPLANE SOLD
CENTENARY COMPETITOR WELLINGTON PURCHASER The Miles Hawk aeroplane which made history as one of the two New Zealand entrants in the Melbourne Centenary air race, in which it was piloted by Squadron-Leader M. C. McGregor and Mr. H. C. Walker, at that time instructor and club captain respectively of the Manawatu Aero Club, has been purchased by the Wellington Aero Club for £750. “ During the course of the race the machine established a record for light aircraft between England and Darwin of five days 15 hours. Considering that the aeroplane’s engine fs only of 130 horse-power the performance was regarded by English aviation experts as remarkable. Originally the machine was purchased on the strength of a guarantee by business men, but as the full amount of the money was not raised it has been garaged since its arrival at Palmerston North, and its disposal has been forced upon the club through lack of financial support.
