NEW YEAR ATTRACTIONS

HOLIDAY FIXTURES WIDESPREAD INTERESTS Holiday attractions in the Gisborne district during the New Year are widespread, important events being staged in Gisborne, To Karaka, Nuliaka, Waipiro Bay and Tikitiki. These arc in addition to the many picnic parties organised on a large and small scale to the beaches,, holiday resorts, or shady bush reserves in various parts of the district. One of the main attractions for the public of Gisborne will be the Te Karaka sports on New Year’s Day. Amateur and professional athletic and cycling events, axemen’s contests, special wrestling matches, national dancing and horse events are expected to attract great interest, and in addition to these there will be other forms of competition for the general public. Luncheon and refreshments will be available on the ground, and hot, water and milk also will be available. A sports dance in Hie evening will wind up what should be a most successful day. Another fixture which usually attracts much interest from the Gisborne and Wairoa public is (lie Nuliaka Show. One reason for its popularity is the shady slope, which makes a natural grandstand, under which Show patrons may picnic and at the same time watch the progress of the ring events. The usual Snow features are catered for, and the Nuliaka A. and P. Association is usually fortunate in having lino weather.

Bowls attracts less public attention than many sports, but the bowling greens in Gisborne should bo crowded on New Year’s Day and succeeding days during tile decision of the Peace Shield tournament, which is one of the big events under the auspices of the Gisborne Bowling Centre. Tennis at Waipiro Bay is always a popular fixture, following on the district championship tournament in Gisborne, and play is usually on the same high plane as in the championship matches the previous week. Play will commence on New Year’s Day, and will continue for the rest- of the week. Another Coast event which is attracting much interest is the Waiapu Athletic Club’s sports at Tikitiki. The usual arrangements have been made for a successful outing. The Ormond sports will be the main holiday fixture for January 2, when complete arrangements have been made for the usual athletic and cycling events, in addition to other holiday attractions.
