AUSTRALIAN DISPUTE

CRICKET TEAM FOR INDIA BOARD MEMBER’S VIEW HOME INTERESTS FIRST (Elcc. Tel. Oopyrif-hT—United Press Assn.) (Received July 29, noon.) MELBOURNE, July 29. A brisk controversy continues over the action of the Cricket Board of Control, in excluding several prominent players from Tarrant’s Indian cricket tour. Victorian members of the board declare that the criticism is unjustified. Dr. It. L. Morton, voicing his own and his colleagues’ views,- said that although the board, has no control over' individual cricketers as such, it has'complete control over teams visiting and leaving Australia.

“Our attitude has been that no test players likely to participate in the South African tour, and no prospective players in Sheffield Shield matches should be included in Tarrant’s team,” he said. “Our desire lias been, firstly, to prevent Sheffield Shield fixtures becoming second class, with a corresponding loss of public interest and income, and, secondly, to keep faith with the New Zealand Cricket Council, which is bringing out an English tcain which will play matches here en route to the Dominion, the revenue from which, to some extent, will recoup New Zealand for the heavy outlay.” Dr. Morton added that, a cable message received from tho Indian Board of Control on March 2S accepted the conditions and agreed to abide by the board’s ruling in regard to the players chosen for the- Indian tour. Tarrant had undertaken to select only those who had retired from firstclass cricket, or were unlikely to be required for tho intcr-Statc programme.
