RACES AT THE PARK

TURF CLUB’S MEETING GASMAN WINS AGAIN CAPELLA ABBEY SCORES Cold winds springing up in the early part of the afternoon were felt keenly by patrons of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's races at the Park this julternoon, but did not affect the attendance, which continued to grow until the -{third race had been disposed of. Gasman had his second win of the meeting when he carried the big end <*f s the purse in -the Second JSaeK Flat Handicap, fle was a hot favorite for the race, in which the other runners were Joystick, Flying Mimic and Golden Pennant. Joystick had a bit of backing, but did not run .kindly until halfway through the race, and his .efforts from that point on indicated that with a better position in the early stages he would have been hard to dispose of. The Waikanae Handicap was a good thing for Good. Hunting, -who got in front not long after the start and was never headed. Royal Bengal, the favorite for this race, was never better than fourth in the running and Ins form was generally disappointing. Alby ran ap honest race and Sunny Sky, who was last but one in a well 1 strung out field at half-way, put in a great finish to get third place, close up to the second horse. After the fourth race the totalisator was £312 down by comparison with the . second day of tho 1933 winter meeting, the expectations of club officials in this matter having proved too optimistic. Tli.ere was a fair chance of recovering in the second half of the prohowever, taking a line through | the totalisator statistics for the first \ day. SECOND HACK FLAT HANDICAP, of £3O; second horse, £7; third, £3; 7 furlongs. 1 W. Jones’ b g Gasman, 3yrs., Gascony—Symbolism, 0.3 (.1. Leach) .. .. .. .. 1 2 H. M. Preston’s ch g Joystick, syrs., 8.2 (W. Rrougnton ) .. 2 3 R. G. Fenton’s ch m Flying Mimic, 4yrs., 7.10 (S. Tremain) 3 Also started: 4 Golden Pennant, 7.3 (G. Gomm). Scratchings were heavy for the Second Hack Flat Handicap, and only four horses went to the post,sThursday's form leaving the public no choice but Gasman, though Joystick was well liked by a good portion of the bettors, who looked for a slightly better dividend than the favorite offered. In the running of the race Joystick’s chances were aiteated by his slowness to get into his stride, and lie never ran really satisfactorily until three furlongs had been covered. Gasman and Flying Mimic were both swift off the mark. Golden Pennant also got away well, the tbpeo being on even terms to the first, bend. Turning into the straight Golden Pemiant dropped back and Gasman and Flying Mimic went on together, Joystick at this stage being four lengths away and losing more ground along the stretch. Gasman was half a length ahead at the half-mile, hut Flying Mimic on the rails kept him up to a smart pace and stole the lead on the bend, showing a head in -front as they hit the straight. Joystick was now close up and in a good position for the run home, but the effort to get up seemed to tell in the straight, for though he made a good bid, Gasman held him off to win by three-quarters ' of a length, Flying Mimic staying on fairly well to fill third place, a length behind Joystick, Golden Pennant was a poor last. Time, Imin. 31 d-Sjsee. TE HAPAEA HACK STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of £00; second horse, £10; third, £5; about 2J miles. 3 M. lu. Moore’s b g Gapella Abbey, aged, Quin Abbey—Semolina, 10.3 (F. E. Baker) 1 1 J. H. Evans’ br g Cromwell, 6yrs., 10.2 (A. McGregor) 2 3 J. Jobson’s b g New Ferry, aged, 9.0 fcarr. 9.0)), (J. Walsh) ... 3 Also started: 2 Kahufioke, 11.7 (P. Mcllroy); 4 Puccini, 9.0 (F. A. Dunn). A sensation was created in the concluding stages of the Te Jfapara Hack Steeplechase Handicap, Puccini and Kahunoke, the leading horses, falling when coming into the straight on the last circuit. New Ferry, Puccini and Kahunoke were well placed throughout and were in the lead going out of the straight on the commencement of the last circuit. With five furlongs to go, Puccini was moving up and took the lead' at the half-mile, it then being anyone’s race. Kahunoke aridi Capella Abbey led over the next obstacle, with New Ferry dropping back. Coming to the straight, Puccini and Kahunoke were leading when they fell, leaving Capella Abbey in the lead. Capella Abbey went on to win comfortably from Cromwell, with New Ferry six lengths away. Time, smin. 23 4-ssec.
