CAUGHT BY GAS IN PIT

TWO WORKMEN SUCCUMB FOUR IN SERIOUS STATE WAGON DRIVER COLLAPSES (Elec. Tci. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received July 23, 11.3 d a.m.) NEWCASTLE, July 22. Six men working in a pit repairing underground gas mains were overcome this afternoon by escaping gas. Two are dead and the others arc in hospital in a serious condition.

A third man concerned died from natural causes, while driving a mine rescue station wagon from the scene of t he tragey. Resellers, driven back by the gas, managed to lassoo one man, who was hurried to a hospital. The others wore subsequently carried out by firemen wearing gas masks.

Two mou were engaged in putting a test pipe in a high pressure main when the gas commenced to escape. Four men went to their assistance and were ills') overcome by the fumes. One of the latter group and one of the two men first in difficulties lost their lives.
