SHARP 'QUAKES
ALARM AT TAUPO NO DAMAGE REPORTED (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, last nigf t. Commencing shortly before % 11 o'clock on Monday night, a series', of sharp earthquake shocks alarmed residents throughout the night, varying in intensity from sharp jolts to mere tremors. Two -further shocks of slight intensity were experienced todav.
No damage is reported, although all Che residents were .soriously alarmed. The shocks were accompanied by subterranean rumblings, Avhic'h seemed to proceed across the lake. A number of slips were brought down in the Hatepe Gorge, between Taupo and Tokaanu, but the roaa wa* cleared by 10 o'clock to-day, and traffic was able to proceed. Two slips also partially (blocked the road in the vicinity of Wairakei, but these were also quickly cleared.
The shocks were nor felt in Roto rua.
