BAY OF PLENTY SEAT

NATIONAL CANDIDATE MR. MERRY'S POSITION (Pur Prtvts Association.) OPOTIKI, last night, At the invitation of Mr. J. T. Merry, a candidate for the Bay of* Plenty seat at the goneral election, a meeting representative of the National Political Federation met last evening. Mr. Merry reminded the meeting that he had placed country before party, and had permitted Mr. K. S. Williams to be returned unopposed at the last elections. This act had been appreciated by -Mr. Williams and the Government, representatives of the latter having assured Mr. Merry that his action would lie remembered at the next election. Mr. Merry suggested that quite apart from assuiancos received then, he might reasonably expect from Reform supporters a returii of the courtesy which he had extended to the party and to -Mr. Williams.

The meeting considered Mr Merry's attitude a reasonable one, and unanimously resolved: "That this meeting of Opofiki representatives of the National Political federation registers its objection to a proposed method of selection of an official candidate for the Bay of Plenty electorate, and urged that 'Air. .J. T. Merry receive immediate endorsement as (he official candidate. The resolution was ordered to be telegraphed to the Hon. R. Masters and Mr. Ardell, organiser of the party.
