HENI HAUKAMAU CUP MATAKAOA BEAT WAIAPU (Herald Correspondent.) Matakaoa'-S hopes of recovering the Fleni Uauknmau Cup from Waiapu suibuiiion wort*.realised last Saturday when the representatives defeated Waiapu, die holders, at Tikitiki by 12 points to J. The day was beautifully fine and the ground, although somewhat heavy, was playable, and there was a good attendance. The exhibition of the Rugby code was not of high order. In the first half the Waiapu forwards 'dominated the situation and were unfortunate not to have put on a larger score than six points, Waiapu's iiily score. Waiapu's second fiveeighths, instead of passing the 'ball to an experienced centre like Pepere, adopted the mistake of kicking the ball into tin? hands of Goldsmith, who expeeted it.

Gn the other hand, Matakaoa's forwards were slack and tackled high. Matahiki scored Waiapu's try as a result of a forward rush. Pepere failed to convert, although the. kick was an easy one, but succeeded in kicking a penalty goal. The Waiapu forwards played so 'hard in the first spell that they collapsed during the second 1 spell, while the Matakaoa pack woke up and ran over their opponents. In one forward rush Manuel scored a try which Poutu converted from a difficult angle. Stirling, from a good distance, kieked a penalty goal and Goldsmith a field goal. Amongst the Waiapu forward? Tuhoro, Matahiki and Kawa wore prominent, and Ruwhiu, Poutu and Manuel were outstanding amongst the Matakaoa pack. Mr Wliaipooti was the referee.
