HIGHWAY TO WAIROA
HANGAROA ROUTE A HIGHER SUBSIDY A larger rate of subsidy has been granted by the Main Highways Board for construction work on Gentle Annie Hill. Information to this effect was read at to-day's meeting of the Cook County Council in a letter from the board's (jrisborno representative, Mr.. 0. G. Thornton, who also mentioned other works on the road. Mr. Thornton advised that the board had approved of the request that the council's present contribution of £8(X) per annum to the Gisborne-Wairoa, via riangaroa, main highway, 21.4 miles to the Wairoa countv boundary should be extended to March 31, 1937. The board had also approved the proposals for the." improvement of the section 2£m. (Avoniale end of Harris' Hill) and Stewart's and also some further improvements between Tiniroto and Te Reiriga which were estimated to cost £1436 for formation and £2120 for metalling. The Unemployment Board would contribute approximately half of the labor twjfl; The work was designed to bring jtfic whole road more or less in keeping with the sections eitHor constructed ot being constructed, namely Grey's te Tiniroto, Harris' Hill and Gentle Annie to Wae-renga-o-kuri. The board had agreed to increase the subsidy to f?ie construction of t'.,e Gentle Annie section from £2" Tor •Bi '.to £3 for £1 for work done after MarfJi 31. ,
r The chairman, Mr. Charles Matthews, said that this increase in. subsidy was very satisfactory to the council.
