ANOTHER BRAKES TEST

COMMENCES AUGUST 1 APPEAL TO LOCAL BODIES COOR COUNTY ACTION Another cheek on the brake? and lights of motor vehicles will commem-e from August 1. Advice to this effect was received by the Cook County Couneii to-day from the Commissioner of Transport, who appealed for the co-operation of local bodies The council decided to co-operate with the department. The letter from the Commissioner of Transport contained the following: "It appeirs that the very real improvement in brakes and lights which re suited from the check-up last year is not now nearly so noticeable, and numbers of cases of glaring headlights and faulty brakes have, been reported to me.

"The number of deaths and accidents on the toads have increased to an alarming degree, and for the first four months of this year the number of deaths resulting from motor accidents amounted to 63, compared with 51 for the same period last year. For every person killed on the highway approximately 35 are injured. I feel justified, therefore, in seeking the co-operation of your council in organising another Dominion-wide check-up of brakes and lights of all motor vehicles.

•'Acting on the experience gained last time, 1 have arranged for the department to provide a standard sticker free of cost to all local authorities who l arc prepared to co-operate, and the question of a uniform certificate to be issued by automobile clubs and garages has also been taken up in these organisations. The certificate is handed by the driveler owner to your traffic officer, and provision is made for bis signature where it meets with bis approval. "If, is suggested that- your 'traffic officer, when actually testing vehicles, should satisfy himself that the handbrake is capable of holding the vehicle stationary on an incline, amd a stopping test be curried out when it is noticeably defective.
