Dunedin.—July 15: Arrived, Holm dale, 6.55 a.m., from Wellington. jAn engagement is announced between John Russell, only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. ,W; G. Sloman, Wellington, and Aileen’Agnes, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Nicholls, Rere, Gisborne. . A creditable performance was registered recently by-Mr. B. Thompson, a member of the Professional Cycling Club. He cycled to Whakatane on his racing machine and his time from Matawai to Whakatane was shr. 55min. Returning on the’ following week-end, ho reached Gisborne, in the one day, his travelling time being’9hr.' 15min. In connection . with the projected gathering of’ex-service men, to meet the Governor-General .to-morrow, it- is intended that the soldiers’ welcome to Lord Galway should be thoroughly representative, and not'merely confined to men who served iri the Great- War.' Veterans of the. South African and other campaigns are expected to participate in the gather-' ing, which will take place at the King’s Theatre at 11 o’clock. I The sequel to the victimisation ot four cycle dealers in Hawera recently, when they Were persuaded to-buy stolen bicycles from a young girl, was heard in the Children’s Court at Wanganui on Saturday, when a 17-year-okl girl faced four charges of stealing cycles at Hawera, and two charges of stealing cycles at Wanganui. The girl was placed- under the care of the child welfare; officer. for two years by Mr J. 11. Salmon, 5.. M., ,vho ordered her to make restitution of the amount involved. A ribbon-fish nearly Bft in length was caught by •fishermen on a launch olf Mnkara, near Wellington. It is being sent to Professor Kirk, of Victoria Uni- - versity College. The ribbon-fish is a deep-water creature, reminiscent of the frost-fish; it is long, narrow and edifice, of a beautiful silver lifstre, with scarlet fins and scarlet tipped rays attached to its head, for tho purpose, it is surmised, of attracting its prey. The silver color can he rubbed off easily;, it, looks much like wet aluminium I paint. The bright colors fade soon after j death.
