MARGARET W DISABLED
BROKEN CRANKSHAFT MISHAP AT SEA IGO-MILE TOW TO AUCKLAND A Proas Association message from Auckland this morning stated that the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat and Mercantile Company’s motor vessel Margaret W. (Captain J. K. Owen) had broken her crankshaft at sea- on route from Gisborne to Auckland. The accident occurred just before midday on Saturday, 14 hours after the ship had left- port. Shc_ lay helpless until picked up by the Richardson and Company’s motor vessel Pukeko on Saturday night. Fortunately fine weather prevailed and the sea was calm. When taken in tow by the Pukeko the Margaret W. had 160 miles to go to Auckland and the tow, which Was made in favorable weather conditions, proved uneventful.
The Margaret W.. which is a motorvessel of 394 torus gross, loft Gisborne at 9.25 p.m. on Friday and when the accident occurred she would be heading across the Bay of Plenty, some distance off Cape Runaway. She was originally expected to reach Auckland at daybreak on Sunday morning, but in tow of the m.v. Pukeko she arrived there last night. No difficulty was experienced in' unloading a consignment of fat cattle from Gisborne at the Orakei wharf, while the other Auckland cargo was to be handled as usual at King’s wharf. The m.v. Pukeko was en route from Napier to Portland when she took the Margaret AY. in tow. On completion of the tow last night she was expected io continue her voyage to Portland and load there to-day as previously scheduled.
While the Margaret W. is laid up at Auckland having the broken crankshaft replaced, her run from Auckland to Gisborne will be taken over by the s.s. Tiroa, which left Gisborne about midday to-day for the northern port. She will load there on Wednesday and return to Gisborne on Friday.
