MR. LYONS’ AUDIENCE TALK YVITM Ur DUCK ROME. July 5. Wearing while soutane and white skull-cap, the Pope received Mr. and Mrs. Lyons to-day in his study overlooking (lie courtyard of his palace. They talked for a, quarter of an hour, using as interpreter the British Minister lo the Vatican. Sir Charles Wingfield. Mrs. Lvons. in a black evening dress and black mantilla, and Mr. Lyons in evening dress, were saluted on arrival iv tbe Pope’s Swiss bodyguard, wearing their mediaeval uniforms. Afterwards Mr. Lyons interviewed Cardinal Pacelli, Papal Secretary of State, and had lunch with Sir Charles Wingfield. When received bv Signor Mussolini at the Foreign Office this evening, Mr. Lyons found instead of an aggressive domineering dictator, a genial, vigorous man. who chatted in English regarding the progress of Australia, and Italy. Mr. and Mrs. Lyons dined with Archbishop Cattaneo, formerly Apostolic Delegate to Australia, and afterwards motored through the city.
